What is Auctoritas?

In ancient Rome, auctoritas described something that could never be demanded or imposed. It was earned. Unlike formal power (potestas), auctoritas reflected the quiet influence that naturally emerged from wisdom, integrity, sound judgement and consistent action.

Why Expertise Eventually Stops Being Enough

Throughout my career in global technology companies including Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco, AWS, Palo Alto Networks and SUSE, I noticed something surprising.

The professionals with the highest technical expertise were not always those who progressed into leadership.

Many brilliant people quietly struggled with:

  • perfectionism
  • fear of visibility
  • difficulty setting boundaries
  • imposter syndrome
  • overthinking
  • self-doubt

None of these appeared on a CV. Yet they shaped careers every day. Expertise had opened the door. Something else determined how far people went.
